Hello! For next Monday (30th September) I’d like you to choose a topic for your individual persuasive speech and do some research so that you have notes to work on and are able to plan and draft your speech in class. You can also use smartphones in class to do research. Don’t print up pages and pages of stuff from websites – half of it won’t be relevant! If you click on the link below you can see the ppt we have been using in class and there is information about the speech and suggestions for possible topics to base your talk on – see slides 38-43.

HOMEWORK – given out 2/10, due Mon 7th October

‘The Hunger Games’ Chapter 1 – Alternative Ending 1/2 to 1 Jotter page You can type it if you want.

Imagine that you are one of the other children at the Reaping. You are waiting to see whose name is going to be picked.

Imagine how you would be feeling and what thoughts might be running through your mind:
• You might be part of the draw for the first time or this might be your last.
• Is your name entered many times or only a few?
• How do you feel about the draw? Will you escape?
• What about your friends or family?
• What do you feel as the name is picked?
• What happens immediately after the first name is read out?

TASK:
Write an alternative ending which describes the moment the name of the first District 12 tribute is drawn out.
Choose your words and images carefully to make your writing tense and exciting to read. Use vivid techniques. Check your sentences and paragraphs carefully.
Write your ending from: ‘The crowd draws in a collective breath and then you can hear a pin drop, and…’ (p20) OR you can start a little bit before this if you want.
